Top Ten Favorite Super Heroes

1) Wolverine, particularly early stories by Chris Claremont, and Peter David with art by Jhon Buscema.

2) Moon Knight, specifically “Moon Knight: the bottom,” a 2006 re-launch of the title, though i enjoy his early appearances as well.  He has also had some great cameos in spiderman comics.

3) Iron Fist, is another comic who’s early appearances i liked but i was blown away by “the immortal Iron Fist” from 2006.  I also liked his earier “heroes for hire” arc and his run as a replacement for an m.i.a. daredevil….In my opinion the replacement was better than the original.

4) Silver Surfer, a bit too powerful to have his own monthly series (although he did several times for short runs) he does his best work in cameos featured in other heroes story arcs.

5) “V”, a fantastic character from fantastic creator alan moore.  Like many of moores creations he is the main character of one mini series.  Moore’s creations only inhabit the tale he wants to tell and when the stories over so is the character.  This process is unthinkable to most comic publishers who need to suck every last dollar from there property whether it makes sense or not.

6) Daredevil, particularly the frank miller run where in daredevil became much more gothic, introduced elektra and killed her….unfortunately she was resurected by other writers before her body was cold making the poignant death meaningless.  The brian michael bendis issues of the early 2000’s were also great.

7) Nick Fury, the psychadelic Steranko years were my favorite, when fury was a cold war super spy ala james bond but the howling commandos were great too.

8) Usagi Yojimbo, all are great as they are all written by creator Stan Sakai who never relinquished the rights to his character.  Usagi’s service under lord Mifune stands out for me as exceptional but its all good.

9) Hawkeye, the bow weilding avenger has always been a favorite of mine.  I always enjoy the low powered heroes and on the avengers he was really the only one.  Steer clear of the goliath issues in which he is able to grow to giant proportions.

10) Storm, great x-men character especially when written by chris claremont.  I liked her best in the late 70’s/early 80’s incarnations but its all good.  I always thought she should lead the x-men and liked it best when she was written as a street wise secondary leader for the group.

note: As the x-men are an allegory for the minority struggle against bigotry why not have them lead by a strong black woman.

Honorable mentions: Bloodshot in his early valiant issues, Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow before they turned Storm Shadow (possibly cobras only intersting villian) into a hero thus destroying the rivalry, and the following x-men; night crawler, archangel, beast, psylocke, havoc and gambit.
